Q: Do I need an amateur radio (ham) license?
A: No. An amateur radio license is not required to use the Crosswarn Trunked Radio System.

Q: What is the Crosswarn Trunked Radio System?
A: Crosswarn is a Project 25 (P25) Phase I digital trunked radio network built using Raspberry Pi computers and MMDVM hotspot hardware. It provides reliable digital voice communications over an IP-connected infrastructure.

Q: What equipment do I need?
A: You'll need a compatible P25-capable radio that can be programmed for the Crosswarn system. Configuration information and system parameters are available to registered users. You'll also need 1 Raspberry Pi, 1 MMDVM duplex board, and one MMDVM USB Hat.

Q: What radios are supported?
A: Most P25 Phase I capable radios can be used, including many Motorola, Harris, BK Technologies, Tait, and other commercial radios that support trunking. Compatibility may vary depending on the radio model and firmware.

Q: Is this connected to public safety radio systems?
A: No. Crosswarn is a privately operated radio network and is completely independent of any public safety or government communications systems.

Q: Can I use my existing hotspot?
A: If your hotspot is based on an MMDVM modem and Raspberry Pi, it may be compatible. Additional configuration may be required depending on your hardware.

Q: Is there a membership fee?
A: No. Access to the system is currently provided at no cost.

Q: How do I request access?
A: Simply register for a Radio ID through our website. Once approved, you'll receive the information needed to access the system.

Q: Can I host a site or help expand the network?
A: Yes! We welcome community participation. If you're interested in hosting a Raspberry Pi/MMDVM site or contributing to the network, please contact us to discuss deployment options.

Q: Where is the system available?
A: Crosswarn is an IP-connected network, allowing participating sites to be linked together regardless of location. Coverage depends on the availability of local nodes and participating site operators.

Q: Are communications encrypted?
A: Some are. Some system channels use encryption like ADP/ARC4 and AES256. Users should not transmit sensitive or confidential information as other system users share the same keys.

Q: Can I share the encryption keys?
A: No. Never share your encryption keys. Authorized members of the system may only have Crosswarn's encryption information. Result of sharing encryption keys will include a rekey and you will be removed from the system.

Q: Can I monitor the system with a scanner?
A: Any scanner capable of receiving and decoding P25 Phase I trunked systems may be able to monitor the network depending on if you are in range of a site. 

Q: Who maintains the network?
A: Crosswarn is maintained by volunteers who enjoy digital radio technology and are committed to building a reliable, community-driven communications network.
